IMAGINE

We say we want a health care system that includes everyone. But, the definition of “everyone" keeps changing. When we have health care we don't seem too troubled that others don't. Yet when we lose it we become outraged even militant.

Ruled by the fear of not having enough is what permits us to create a system like the one we have in this country. It’s like a high stakes game of musical chairs. We step on others because "if I don't step on someone, someone will step on me".

The fear, of there not being enough for me, allows me to support a system that rations care often denying it to the most vulnerable: those without a job, those who cannot provide proof of income, those that have not worked long enough, or invisibles who sustain the fabric of society without ever receiving pay. Funny, that denying privilege to a vulnerable group keeps me from feeling vulnerable myself, at least for the time being...

Stress goes round and round. We are used to it. We are blinded by it. Perhaps it is difficult to imagine a system different from the one we know so well: a system that caters to some and not others. Yet, until we do, our own healing will not take place.

The alternative which we deeply yearn is one which finds a way to include everybody in the safety net. This alternative thrives on an attitude of love and care for all. It reduces unnecessary pain and stress. Instead of undermining life, it supports life. We need such alternative that effortlessly and as a matter of fact brings out enough chairs for everyone to take a seat.
